Swedish executive Roy Andersson's parody A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence won the Golden Lion honor for best film at the Venice Film Festival.
The unique motion picture was hailed by commentators for its moving investigation of what it intends to be human.
Andersson told the crowd he had been roused by Italian executive Vittorio De Sica's 1948 film Bicycle Thieves.
The film broadly tipped for the honor - Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look of Silence - won the Grand Jury prize.
US performer Adam Driver won best on-screen character for his depiction of a father attempting to spare his infant child's life in Saverio Costanzo's New-York based story Hungry Hearts.
Italian performer Alba Rohrwacher won best on-screen character for her execution in the same film.
